Al-Awda, the Palestinian Right of Return Coalition, is actively seeking donations to support the Gaza Community Mental Health Program, whose headquarters in Gaza City were badly damaged in Israel's most recent assault on Gaza.
The GCMHP provides an invaluable service to Gazans living under occupation. While many international humanitarian groups, such as Doctors Without Borders and the ICRC, have been working bravely in Gaza for many years to provide physical health services, there are very few resources to deal with the mental health of a population living under the constant threat of siege, economic blockade, air strikes, home demolitions, poverty, arrest, detention, and torture.
The GCMHP provides counseling and other mental health services, with a special emphasis on children (half the population of Gaza is under 16), women, and torture survivors. Their work is not just a critical social service--it is in itself a nonviolent form of resistance to occupation.
Donations to help the GCMHP rebuild their headquarters can be made online through the Al-Awda website.
