amman

The most important direction to give cab drivers in Amman is not "left" or "right," but "up." I don't think there's a single straight, flat road in the entire city. Imagine combining the haphazard urban planning of the developing world with a landscape to rival San Francisco's, and you have Amman.

Despite its roller-coaster topography, Amman is a chill city that might even feel a bit tame compared to the bustle of Cairo or the political intensity of Palestine. Or maybe I've just become used to uneven sidewalks, kamikaze cab drivers and walking calmly across multiple lanes of oncoming traffic. The only major nuisance is that everyone seems to advise against drinking the tap water.
