bil'in postscript

Remember Majde Burnat, son of Iyad, the kid who so confidently took us out to the wall and the protest point in Bil'in? He was arrested by the Israeli army yesterday along with two of his friends. All of them are fourteen years old.

People get arrested in Palestine all the time. But it's different when its someone you know. We met Majde, and we met his parents, and I can't imagine what they're feeling now. We sat in their house. We heard stories about how soldiers pick up kids from the village, detain, beat and terrorize them when they want names of people to arrest. We know these stories because Iyad told us. Except this time it's his son.

UPDATE 8/7/10: We visited Bil'in again yesterday and found out this Majde wasn't the kid we met, but his cousin. That's what happens when you have a big extended family with the same name. As far as anyone knows, all three kids are still in detention. So it doesn't make quite as dramatic a story. But it still fucking sucks.
